As the global demand for luxury products continues to soar, the organic bedding market is projected to reach $1.1 billion by 2025. A brand that has been instrumental in driving this growth is California Design Den, founded by Deepak Mehrotra. In an exclusive interview with Money+Investing, Mehrotra shares how he led the brand to become the highest-rated natural bedding product on Amazon in just five years.
Launched in 2017 as a direct-to-consumer brand, California Design Den offers high-quality bedding at a great value, with over 75 shades and prints in various sizes from twin to California king. The company started with a modest $2 million in its first year, but has since grown into a 9-figure brand.
Mehrotra attributes the brand’s success to his team’s extensive knowledge of the bedding industry, and the fact that his family owned and operated a top-of-the-line bed linen manufacturing unit in India for almost two decades.

“Our product knowledge and ability to produce quality products at the right price point were never an issue,” says Mehrotra. “However, paying attention to our customers’ reviews and feedback was the key to our success.”
With a focus on providing top-notch bedding and listening to customer feedback, California Design Den is poised for continued growth in the competitive luxury bedding market. The company is now the top-rated cotton sheet brand on Amazon.
Mehrotra says his company’s formula for success is simple: “Pay close attention to our customers’ reviews and feedback, address any issues or concerns they may have, and continuously improve our product and communication.”

Of course, scaling a business isn’t always easy. Mehrotra shared that one of the challenges the business faced as it grew was “realizing that top-line growth doesn’t necessarily translate into bottom-line profits.”
“We had to shift from a manufacturer mentality to a retailer one and make difficult decisions on product selection, which sometimes meant cutting back on inventory width and depth. We learned that focusing on profitability is just as important as scaling our business,” the founder said.
With just two months into 2023, Mehrotra said his team will continue to focus on “improving and refining” its product line.
“We believe there is always room for improvement, and we will strive to be the best natural and sustainable bedding brand out there,” he said.

“We also foresee continued growth in the market for organic bedding products, as consumers become increasingly aware of the benefits of buying products that are better for their health and the environment.”
