Apple is hosting its annual keynote event on Tuesday, and is expected to announce its new iPhone 15 lineup, including updated USB-C chargers.
Although the company already changed its iPads and MacBooks to USB-C charging, it hasn’t yet changed its smartphones. But a new law approved by the European Union will require smartphones and other small electronic devices like tablets and speakers to support USB-C charging by 2024.
The law aims for interoperability to cut down on the number of chargers consumers have to keep on hand for all their devices, regardless of manufacturer.
Apple has consistently touted its Lightning charger, first introduced in 2012, saying it allows for faster charging, but the company conceded it would have to comply with the EU law.
“Yes, we will learn about new phone charging interoperability, but is that really the headline? All devices will need to comply with the 2024 European Union laws,” said artificial intelligence adviser and tech executive Marva Bailer, author of “Be Unexpected: Resetting Routines to Revolutionize the Future of Work.”
“Yes, this may save $25 a year, it is a one-time fix to the average of three chargers consumers have. Over 69% of people charge their phones twice a day and are over this process,” Bailer said.
“The area to watch is how will they change the charging experience altogether? Imagine if you never had to charge your device with a plug? Our future interconnected world with IOT (Internet of Things) is already on its way to bring this innovation and Apple is at the forefront,” Bailer said.
During the Tuesday event, dubbed “Wonderlust,” the company is also expected to announce several rumored new features for the iPhone 15 lineup, including the “Dynamic Island” interactive home screen that was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro last year.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to get new features including a lighter and thinner titanium casing, and a rear-facing periscope lens that provides better optical zoom. The higher end models are also expected to get Apple’s new A17 chip with 3 nanometer technology.
Along with the new iPhone lineup, the company will likely unveil the Apple Watch Series 9, and possibly the more rugged Ultra 2 smartwatch.
The event will be livestreamed on Apple’s website at 10 a.m. PT.
