In August, there were more than a million fewer job opportunities than in July, which may be a sign that the enormous labor gap in the United States is starting to narrow.
According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released on Tuesday, there were a total of 10.05 million open positions for the month, a 10% decrease from the 11.17 million openings reported in July.
This represented the largest one-month loss since April 2020 in the early stages of the Covid pandemic and was also well below the 11.1 million FactSet projection.
The overall separations increased by 182,000 while the number of hiring increased little.
The number of resignations, or people who voluntarily quit their jobs, increased by 100,000 for the month to 4.16 million.
